UN Under-Secretary-General Liu Zhenmin addresses Youth RIGF participants

"I call on all Forum participants to use their creative energy to contribute to the development of an open, safe, stable and accessible Internet. You are our future," said Liu Zhenmin, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, in his greeting to the participants of the First Youth Internet Governance Forum.

According to the UN Under-Secretary General, the Internet has proven to be vital in this difficult period of the COVID-19 pandemic. It connects us online, allowing us to study and work remotely, to stay in touch with family and friends. But the pandemic has also exacerbated existing problems: cybersecurity and data protection. His Excellency Mr. Liu Zhenmin also recalled that 3.5 billion people in the world today do not have Internet access, thereby highlighting the problem of the digital divide. Bridging this gap is one of the challenges that the younger generation, among others, will have to tackle.

"Young people today are the driving force behind the development of the Internet," said the UN Under-Secretary General.
